about

A case of drawing on somebody else’s musical material, so uncharacteristic of the Otkaz—although, since this is little more than a liberal interpretation, a twisted performance of a verse and a half from “Tuchi nad gorodom vstali” (“Clouds gathered over the town..”), a song by Pavel Armand from the Soviet film classic Chelovek s Ruzhyom (“Man with a Gun”), this is as much of a quote as the themes or chords from Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff or Skriabin in some of Maxim Trefan’s parts.

Roman had heard this song from his grandmother, who would always sing something revolution-spirited, “city romance”–like, from the 1930s Soviet songs of bursting with enthusiasm to arie from Kálmán’s operettas—misquoting everything there was to misquote, in her grandson’s recollection. And though Suslov’s method of composition went unaffected by his grandma’s singing technique, the eclecticity, indirect quotes, a sort of mixing one with the other could well have in part originated there.

lyrics

Clouds got a hold of the city
Rain’s in the cards as of late
Far from it all a young fellow
Walking beyond Narva Gate

Road is long, too long and then some
Please come out, sweet heart of mine
You and I say farewell at the doorstep
Bid me happiness and joy.

You and I say farewell at the doorstep
Could this be the last goodbye

about

Vezhlivy Otkaz Moscow, Russia

Vezhlivy Otkaz was formed in 1985 with a then-popular reggae/ska blend. Since then, they have gone through numerous stylistic changes,
flirting with everything from free jazz to Russian folk. Their sound, however, has always been unique and immediately recognizable.
Suslov’s rhythmic guitar work and unusual high-pitched vocals gives VO’s music a precisely constructed,
crystal-clear sound.
