about

Here is where a hint of singing with words comes in, and odd bits of phrases combine into a fairly clear picture: “you remember,” “the autumn garden,” “we used to rendezvous” (and again, “clouds … gathered”)—and toward the ending, “the war took away that final day.” The same twisting and mixing up (a line from “The Internationale” gets quoted for some reason—and French lyrics from the opening of "La Marseillaise" in the “chorus”)—but at the same time a dull and gnawing feeling. War (hence the desperate verbal outbursts in pseudo-German toward the coda), revolution, crushed life, half-forgotten memories. Irony and sadness, vigour and zest. Scraps of assorted feelings, half-innuendos. And at the center—a fractured piano theme, also reminiscent of something, ostensibly nostalgic, but unmistakably Suslovian (a rare occasion where the part composed by Roman is played by piano alone rather than in unison with the guitar).

Vezhlivy Otkaz Moscow, Russia

Vezhlivy Otkaz was formed in 1985 with a then-popular reggae/ska blend. Since then, they have gone through numerous stylistic changes,
flirting with everything from free jazz to Russian folk. Their sound, however, has always been unique and immediately recognizable.
Suslov’s rhythmic guitar work and unusual high-pitched vocals gives VO’s music a precisely constructed,
crystal-clear sound.
